One woman is dead and another is injured after being stabbed at a Cedar Rapids motel, and a man suspected in the altercation is hospitalized after being shot by a police officer. Cedar Rapids officers were called just after 1:45 early Saturday morning to a disturbance at a Rodeway Inn. An officer was met by two women with knife wounds, who directed the officer to a man running from the motel. The officer gave chase and shot the man; no details were released about his injuries. The officer was not hurt. One of the women later died at a hospital.

Authorities are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a downtown Ames apartment. Officers found the woman around 7 p.m. Saturday after they were sent to check on her welfare. Police say it was not immediately clear how the woman died but the circumstances appear suspicious.

A teenager’s drowning death last year is prompting Iowa lawmakers to consider making it a crime to fail to call emergency responders to report when someone appears to be in serious danger. The family of Noah Herring supports the bill. Herring was 15 when he drowned in April in the Coralville Reservoir. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said three teens and an adult were present at the time, but none placed a call to get help. The bill would make failing to call emergency responders an aggravated misdemeanor.

An Iowa state senator faces an ordinance violation charge for having an undeclared handgun during a screening at the Des Moines International Airport. Urbandale Republican Sen. Brad Zaun was cited Friday afternoon. Police say Zaun does have a permit to carry the weapon.

More than 20 years after it was installed, the University of Northern Iowa is planning to replace the UNI-Dome’s fabric roof. The estimated $7 million to $8 million project is expected to be approved by the Iowa Board of Regents this week. The project would replace only the fabric center portion of the roof, which was last replaced in 1999. The rest of the roof is a plastic polymer that was installed in 2010 and is under warranty until 2040. Minor repairs were done on the deteriorating fabric last year, but a consultant advised that it needs to be completely replaced by 2024. Funding for the replacement could come from private donations, the fieldhouse fund, general fund and athletic department. The UNI-Dome originally opened in 1976.

Multiple law enforcement agencies conducted a raid at two homes in the same block, leading to seven people being arrested on a variety of drug charges. It happened just after 11 o’clock Friday night in the 400 block of Union Street in Clermont. Authorities with search warrants say they discovered meth, marijuana, prescription pills and drug paraphernalia at both locations.

A mother and son from central Iowa have now been arrested in connection to the disturbance at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Deborah Sandoval of Des Moines, and Salvador Sandoval Jr. of Ankeny, were both arrested and appeared in court Friday on federal warrants by FBI special agents. Two other Iowans have been charged with crimes tied to the January Capitol incident.

An inmate has been found dead inside the Scott County Jail in eastern Iowa. 27-year-old Mark Timothy Hudson Sr. was found unresponsive in his general population cell around 11 a.m. Friday. Attempts to revive him failed. Officials say the death does not appear to be suspicious.
