Still A Force

We all know that Donald Trump is still in the heads of Democrats and Never Trumpers…and apparently, all their efforts to take a jab at him are doing nothing but making him stronger among members of his base.

You may have missed the numbers last week, coming as they did as we learned the news of Rush Limbaugh’s passing…but to some degree, they reinforce what Mr. Limbaugh said when Mr. Trump first announced he was running for president.

59 percent of Republican voters said Mr. Trump should play a “major role” in the Republican Party going forward…and that’s up a sizeable 18 points since a survey in the wake of the disturbance at the U.S. Capitol. And that correlates to this stat—the share of Republicans who say Mr. Trump is at least somewhat responsible for the Jan. 6 events is down 14 points, to 27 percent.

Now take a look at the 2024 presidential primary numbers. 54 percent of GOP voters say they would back Trump if the presidential primary were to be held today…that’s the same number he polled just two weeks after the November election, and up a dozen points from that early January poll. In short, a majority of Republicans would vote for him again right now.

Others who show up in the poll also show essentially the same support they had since November…with Mike Pence at 12 percent, Nikki Haley and Donald Trump, Jr., each at 6 percent…the only others with more than a fraction is Mitt Romney (of all people) at 4 percent and Ted Cruz (before the Cancun story) at 3 percent.

Memo to those who wish Trump would simply go away and leave the Republican Party alone…not going to happen, not if voters have their way.
