Panther Women Hoopsters Sweep Indiana State; Play at Drake Wed. at 5:45 p.m. on KXEL

SATURDAY

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – UNI women’s basketball topped Indiana State 88-53 Saturday afternoon to earn a series sweep.

The Sycamores were the first to find the hoop but that didn’t stop the Panthers from a 20-10 scoring run to gain control early in the game. Nicole Kroeger scored seven early points, a three-pointer and two swift layups that helped UNI end the quarter with a 25-16 lead.

Indiana State cut the Panther lead to six points, 29-22, with 6:29 left in the second quarter, but that is as close as the Sycamores would come for remainder of the game.

Emerson Green scored seven of her nine points in the second quarter which allowed UNI to create a 51-33 lead going into halftime.

The Panther defense allowed just six points for the Sycamores in the third. Adrian Folks led Indiana State for the second night in a row with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Sycamores shot 18.2% from behind the arc while the Panthers doubled Indiana State’s shot percentage and went 38.5% from the three-point line.

UNI shot 55.6% from the field for the game. Bre Gunnels held the game-high with 13 points and Megan MaahsNicole Kroeger and Karli Rucker also scored in double-figures.

With the series sweep, the Panthers are now 8-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The Panthers travel to Drake on Wednesday, Jan. 27 to play the Drake Women’s basketball team at 6 p.m.; pregame with Chris Kleinhans Schulz is at 5:45 p.m., exclusively on News/Talk 1540 KXEL.

Drake is third in the conference with a record of 5-2 recording losses from Bradley and Missouri State.

GAME NOTES:

– Grace Boffeli recorded four points and two rebounds.
– The Panthers doubled the Sycamores’ three-point shooting percentage and recorded 38.5% from behind the arc.
– Megan Maahs recorded 12 rebounds in the series. She only needs three more rebounds to claim the No. 2 spot on the All-Time Rebounding list.
– Four Panthers scored in double-figures.
– Cailyn Morgan went 2-2 from the field and 2-2 from the three-point line.

 

FRIDAY

TERRE HAUTE – A historical night for UNI women’s basketball resulted in a 26-point win over the Indiana State Sycamores, 95-69. Megan Maahs is the 26th member of the 1,000-point club and coach Tanya Warren recorded her 250th-career win.

Maahs entered the 1,000-point club with a layup 8:42 left to go in the game. She needed eight points to claim a spot on the list and scored seven in the first 10 minutes. Maahs ended the night with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Warren is the fourth coach in Missouri Valley Conference history who has coached a team to 250 wins and the first at UNI.

Karli Rucker hit a three-pointer on UNI’s first possession and the Panthers never trailed. UNI led 22-19 at the end of the first and 47-36 at the half.

The Panthers went on a 20-11 scoring run in the third put the game out of reach and cruised to the 26-point win.

Five Panthers scored in double-figures including Maya McDermott who recorded a new career-high 20 points, going 6-6 from the field, 3-3 from the three-point line and 5-5 from the line. Also joining McDermott was Rucker (17), Maahs (11), Bre Gunnels (10) and Cynthia Wolf (10). Wolf was also perfect from the field (4-4), three-point line (1-1) and free throw line (1-1).

Indiana State’s, Adrian Folks led the team with a game-high 21 points. The Sycamores shot 40.0% from the field and 63.3% from the free-throw line. The Panthers shot 62.7% from the field, the best shooting percentage in a game since Jan. 15, 2011, when UNI was 33-49 (67.3%) from the field. UNI was 50% (13-26) from the three-point line. UNI was also 85.7% from the charity stripe.

The Panthers are now 7-7 on the year and 4-3 in MVC play. Indiana State of 2-4 and 1-6 in the league.

GAME NOTES:

–    Megan Maahs entered the 1,000 point club. She now has 1,003 career points as a Panther.

–    Tanya Warren is the fourth coach in MVC history to record 250 career wins.

–    Maya McDermott recorded a new career-high 20 points.

–    Five Panthers scored in double-figures.

–    Eleven Panthers scored and all 15 Panthers on the roster recorded a stat in the game.

–    Maya Gyamfi recorded her first career point. A three-pointer in the second half.

–    It is the first game for the Panthers over 90 points in regulation since Last year’s senior night win over Drake.

–    Two players in double figures were perfect from the field. Maya McDermott was 6-6 from the field, 3-3- from the three-point line and 5-5- from the foul line. Cynthia Wolf was 4-4 from the field, 1-1 from the three-point line and 1-1 from the free-throw line.
