LEAANN SAUL GOT THE MOST VOTES…BUT THE MONTHS-LONG PROCESS OF PICKING A NEW CEDAR FALLS AT-LARGE CITY COUNCIL PERSON CONTINUES. OVER 2,200 VOTERS PICKED SAUL DURING TUESDAY’S SPECIAL ELECTION, BUT THAT WAS NOT QUITE 35 PERCENT OF THOSE WHO CAST BALLOTS. FIFTY PERCENT WAS REQUIRED TO WIN, SO A RUNOFF ELECTION WILL BE NEEDED. KELLY DUNN FINISHED SECOND WITH OVER 1800 VOTES, EDGING THIRD-PLACE T.J. FREIN IN THE FIVE CANDIDATE FIELD. THE RUNOFF ELECTION WILL BE AUGUST 4TH, WITH THE EVENTUAL WINNER TAKING NICK TAIBER’S SEAT ON THE CEDAR FALLS CITY COUNCIL.

AFTER AN APPEARANCE IN ACKLEY LAST WEEK, THE VEHICLE GOVERNOR KIM REYNOLDS WAS RIDING IN MADE CONTACT WITH A BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTESTER. YESTERDAY, REYNOLDS TALKED ABOUT THE INCIDENT. REPORTS AT THE TIME INDICATED THAT PROTESTER JAYLEN CAVIL WAS NOT INJURED IN THE INCIDENT.

A WATERLOO BANK ROBBER IS PLEADING GUILTY TO A 2018 HOLD UP. 35YEAR-OLD LUCAS THOMPSON DID NOT SHOW A WEAPON WHEN HE WALKED INTO A UNIVERSITY AVENUE BANK IN OCTOBER OF 2018. HE DID WALK OUT WITH OVER 1,500 DOLLARS BUT WAS ARRESTED THE NEXT DAY. INVESTIGATORS USED DNA EVIDENCE, AS WELL AS IDENTIFYING MONEY IN THOMPSON’S POSSESSION, TO TIE HIM TO THE ROBBERY. HE HAS ALSO SINCE THEN PLED GUILTY TO A ROBBERY AT A NEARBY GAS STATION, WHICH LED TO A 10-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE.

U.S. SENATOR CHUCK GRASSLEY WILL NOT BE ATTENDING THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HIS 40-YEAR SENATE CAREER, DUE TO CONCERNS ABOUT THE CORONAVIRUS. GRASSLEY SAYS MOVING THE CONVENTION FROM CHARLOTTE TO FLORIDA WAS PROBABLY THE RIGHT THING TO DO SINCE NORTH CAROLINA OFFICIALS DID NOT FEEL IT WAS SAFE. GRASSLEY ADDED THAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY SHOULD HAVE A CONVENTION BUT AS SAFELY AS POSSIBLE, AND THAT INCLUDES WEARING FACE MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING. THE CONVENTION IS NOW SCHEDULED TO BEGIN ON AUG. 24 IN JACKSONVILLE, WHERE OFFICIALS BEGAN REQUIRING FACE MASKS IN PUBLIC A WEEK AGO.

EDWARDS FACES ATTEMPTED MURDER AND OTHER CHARGES. HIS BAIL AMOUNT WAS ORIGINALLY $500,000 BUT HAS BEEN REDUCED TO $50,000.

THE ATTORNEY REPRESENTING THE MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING A FORT DODGE PASTOR HAS REQUESTED A CHANGE OF VENUE DUE TO POSSIBLE PREJUDICE IN WEBSTER COUNTY. JOSHUA PENDLETON IS CHARGED WITH FIRST-DEGREE MURDER IN CONNECTION WITH THE KILLING OF ALLEN HENDERSON LAST OCTOBER. PROSECUTORS DID NOT FIGHT THE REQUEST, SO THE CASE WILL BE HEARD IN SCOTT COUNTY.

IOWA IS ONE OF SEVERAL STATES SEEING MORE POSITIVE COVID-19 TESTS RECENTLY. GOVERNOR KIM REYNOLDS SPOKE ABOUT THE CHANGING TRENDS. THROUGH TUESDAY, IOWA HAD ADDED AT LEAST 250 NEW CASES DAILY ON SIX OF SEVEN DAYS THIS MONTH.
