Campaign by Advertising

Who doesn’t love political ads? Alright, no one really loves them, other than the ad agencies that are paid well to create them, and to a lesser degree, the radio and TV stations that air them…although the government mandates that stations charge the lowest rate available, so it’s not the financial bonanza you might think.

Regardless, you’re going to get a healthy dose of them…more than we thought before the pandemic, in fact, in part because candidates won’t be able to get out and meet voters face to face as much.

PQ Media has revised its estimate for political media spending in 2020 to $9.33 billion…a 28.8% increase over 2016, the past presidential election year…literally, almost a third again as much.

Not even a year ago, they projected spending of *only* $8.33 billion…now, a full billion dollars more.

Almost half the total amount will be on local and network broadcast television…and despite how much we seem to hate it, direct mail is also going to be popular, with $1.8 billion being spent on that. The struggling U.S. Postal Service is no doubt cheering that news.

And since the U.S. Senate race in Iowa is one of the top five hotly contested races this year…well, you know what that means. And if you have been paying attention this week…you’ve heard ads for that race on KXEL.

Could get crowded as businesses fully reopen and want to advertise…just as campaigns are scrambling to get before you as well.
