I Know What You Are, But What Am I?
President Trump came to the 2016 campaign with a well-established image as a street fighter, one who was not afraid to declare anything he had to do with was the biggest and best, tagging his opponents with derogatory nicknames and tossing insults about intelligence and personal appearance.
That hasn’t change during his 3-plus years in office. It may make some cringe, but it’s within the image he has molded for himself.
And within certain circles, it works for him.
Democrats must have gotten some polling suggesting that they match him insult for insult. Witness Speaker Pelosi this week fat-shaming the president, calling him morbidly obese, and then saying she was giving him a taste of his own medicine. Then Vice President Biden opted to give the president a nickname of Tweety, in reference to his social media platform of choice.
But to some degree, they fell into his trap. Because when he does it, cringeworthy or not, it fits his style. When they did it, it only came across as awkward and petty. I know it sounds odd, but if he had used the same phrases, it would have seemed more natural…and when they did it, because it didn’t fit their public images, it seemed forced.
Besides, to be morbidly obese typically means being 100 pounds or more overweight, and I don’t think that’s the case with the president.
Frankly, we’re at a pivotal time in our nation’s timeline of success, both economically and health-wise. It would be nice if all the kids could set aside the playground name-calling and come up with answers. But that’s probably more than we should expect from a bunch of doo-doo heads.
