Bernie Drops Out

The news was not unexpected, but the timing was a bit of a surprise yesterday when Bernie Sanders announce to first his campaign staff, and then to supporters and the world, that he was suspending his presidential campaign.

Obviously, the path to securing enough delegates was going to be difficult even before coronavirus affected the entire campaign. With so many primaries being delayed because of COVID-19, there was some thought that by Sanders staying in the race, he could position himself nicely in the event Joe Biden faltered.

But that was always a long shot and Sanders yesterday made it official.

Much in the same way impeachment adversely affected the campaigns of Cory Booker and other senators, who got out of the race before the Iowa caucuses, the circumstances of the pandemic made it impossible for Sanders to secure the necessary money or campaign in person, which was one of his strengths.

The presumptive nominee is now Joe Biden, and those who don’t like it are going to have to hope for a quick failure on his part, leaving enough time for a ‘white knight’ like New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to come riding in to save the nomination, either in delayed primaries or at a somewhat brokered convention.

Again, a long shot and the attention will now focus on who Biden’s vice presidential choice will be. He has already committed it would be a woman. Let the Veep Sweepstakes begin.
