Wednesday night, the UNI Panthers made up for a surprise loss in their Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball opener, defeating Illinois State 71-63 at the McLeod Center to split the season series with the Redbirds.
A.J. Green made five three-point attempts, representing more than half of his game-high 27 points. The night included the 1,000th point of his college career.
Trae Berhow had 17 points, plus 11 rebounds, while Austin Phyfe added a dozen points.
A 21-5 first half run helped send UNI to halftime with a seven point lead, and the Panthers stayed out of reach the rest of the way.
None of Illinois State’s scoring came from the free throw line; in fact, the Redbirds did not attempt a foul shot during the game. The Panthers had just six – converting all of them – in the notably clean contest.
The Panthers remain perfect at the McLeod Center (now 14-0) and now have an 11-2 conference record to lead the MVC by two games. Second-place Southern Illinois lost to Valparaiso, 55-38, on Wednesday.
