The UNI Panthers prevented the Indiana State Sycamores from crossing the goal line Saturday during a 17-9 win at the UNI-Dome.
Combined with other Missouri Valley Football Conference results, the victory gives UNI sole possession of second place in the MVFC at 5-1 (7-3 overall). The Panther are now 5-0 in the UNI-Dome this season.
Christian Jegen and Spencer Perry grabbed interceptions, and Elerson G. Smith forced a fumble on Indiana State’s final drive to help the Panthers earn the eight-point win.
The Sycamores were limited to field goals throughout the day and took their only lead with 7:22 to play in the first quarter on a 24-yard conversion by Jerry Nunez. The Panthers responded with a quick four-play touchdown drive capped by Will McElvain’s 25-yard connection with Suni Lane not quite two minutes later.
The two teams traded field goals to start the second quarter before the Panthers took a 17-6 lead on a 13-yard touchdown run by Trevor Allen.
Indiana State added a field goal on their first drive of the third, but neither defense would yield any additional points for the rest of the afternoon.
Allen rushed 12 times for 62 yards and a touchdown. McElvain was 11-for-20 for 167 yard and a TD. His passing yardage total for the year is up to 2,115.
Smith notched two sacks on the game, and now has 12 this season. Jegen recorded a team-high 10 tackles.
UNI’s win allowed the Panthers to move past South Dakota State in the MVFC standings. Next, UNI will travel to meet the Jackrabbits in Brookings on November 16th.
