Saturday was a career day for the UNI Panthers’ Ellerson Smith.
Sunday, the junior defensive end was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Smith had three sacks and nine total tackles. He also forced a fumble and knocked down a pass.
After the game, Smith talked about showing Idaho State different defensive looks during a 13-6 win.
“Towards the end, we got into a couple of three-man fronts, just to change it up. [We] figured they were going to air it out the last two minutes of the game, so we had to get some guys out there to cover some space. As a D-lineman I’d much rather have four guys out there than three.”
Panther pressure led to five total sacks and three interceptions. UNI is now 2-1. Next up is a matchup against Weber State.
Smith will go into the contest with 10 sacks in his last six games, dating back to the 2018 season.
