Black Hawk Co. Sheriff Wants to Buy Leased Firing Range Property

Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson would like to buy a former quarry, currently leased and used by area law enforcement as a firing range and training center.

The County’s “top cop,” presented his plan involving the 122-acre Pint’s Quarry at Raymond, north of Dubuque Road, to the Board of Supervisors yesterday(Tues), but members put a hold on the proposal until they have time to gather more information and get public input.

Thompson says the BMC Aggregates-owned property can be purchased for $150,000, and he believes state law gives him the right to spend the room-and-board revenue county prisoners pay while they’re in jail, to buy the land without board approval, but the county would be required to own the title to the property.

No word yet on when the Supervisors will take up the matter.
