West Side Rising Sculpture Unveiled in Cedar Rapids

The City of Cedar Rapids this(Weds) afternoon is unveiling the memorial sculpture West Side Rising and Gateway and Memorial Plaza in the Time Check neighborhood of Cedar Rapids.

If you make your way down there, you'll notice stainless steel beams featuring upright and tilted homes. Assistant City Manager Sandy Fowler says it’s designed to honor all the people in the neighborhood who lost everything during the flood of 2008 and had to rebuild.

The tilted homes are those that were washed away while the upright ones are the homes that stayed or were rebuilt after the flood.

The clock at the top of the sculpture reads 10:15, the time at which the water in Cedar Rapids crested.

The color blue reflects the blue porch lights that some of the homes used when residents moved back into the neighborhood.

The Northwest Neighbors Neighborhood Association created that sculpture and Jim Novak from Novak Design Group designed it.
