Vacant Cedar Rapids house damaged by fire

Cedar Rapids firefighters battled a blaze at a vacant home on the city's southeast side on Monday morning.

Public Safety spokesman Greg Buelow says they were first called out to 393 15th Street SE at around 8:30 a.m.

Smoke was showing from the top floor of the two-story house when firefighters arrived.  Crews entered through a side door and made their way upstairs.  Fire damaged a mattress and part of an adjacent bedroom wall.

Buelow says the fire started in or on the mattress.  The exact cause is still under investigation.

Fire crews did not find anyone inside the home when they first got on scene.  No injuries were reported.

The property is owned by Mark Bolton of Cedar Rapids.
