Smulekoff’s leaving downtown Cedar Rapids

A downtown Cedar Rapids retail icon will leave downtown at the end of the year after selling its building to the city.

Smulekoff's started business in 1889.  The large furniture retailer moved to its current building on the east side next to the Cedar River in 1942.

Cedar Rapids mayor Ron Corbett says the company began buyout negotiations several years ago after the flood of 2008. The current location will change hands to city ownership at the end of December.

KCRG-TV9 is reporting that the company informed employees last week it won't stay in business.  That information on the future of the business itself was not confirmed by the company.

Smulekoff's was reportedly in negotiations to move to the new Westdale development.
