Cedar Rapids man injured in rollover crash

A Cedar Rapids man was hospitalized after rolling his sport utility vehicle on Interstate 380 Monday morning.

Cedar Rapids police and fire and Area Ambulance responded to Interstate 380 southbound at H Avenue NE at 2:22 a.m. Monday.  First responders found the driver, 21-year-old Samuel Rodriguez, trapped in the back hatch of the SUV.  Police said the SUV rolled off the ramp, went through the cable and wiring and landed on some trees.

Rodriguez was unresponsive when officials arrived on the scene.  Firefighters had to extract him from the vehicle. Rodriguez was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital.  He was treated and later released.

Police said Rodriguez will be charged with failure to maintain control, insurance violation and failure to wear a seat belt.
