Landmark Iowa City restaurant reopening after fire

A well-known Iowa City restaurant is reopening after a basement fire nearly three months ago.

The Hamburg Inn No. 2 will be serving breakfast once again by Monday morning.  The restaurant is a popular spot for students, Iowa City residents and presidential candidates competing in the state's first-in-the-nation caucuses.

The restaurant closed after a May 18 basement fire. Iowa City fire officials say the blaze started when rags on a storage shelf self-ignited.  The fire destroyed a walk-in cooler, electrical boxes, water softener and office electronics.  Upstairs furniture and political memorabilia suffered smoke damage.

Dave Panther, whose parents opened the restaurant in 1948, says the final cost of the repairs will top $100,000.
