Iowa gambling regulators ponder casino moratorium

The commission that oversees casino licenses in Iowa may discuss whether to stop considering new casino license applications for a while.

Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is meeting in Johnston and Chairman Jeff Lamberti has signaled that the state may have enough gambling for now.

The commission approved a new casino for Jefferson in June, the state's 19th state-regulated casino.  Iowa also has three operated by American Indian tribes.

The commission has stopped accepting new licenses in the past, between May 1998 and November 2004 and again between July 2005 and May 2010.

Two recent consultant reports have concluded that Iowa's modest population growth coupled with adjacent state competition pulling gamblers away means Iowa's market is saturated and it should stop building casinos.
