Police: Teen in Iowa City shooting escaped facility

Police say a 17-year-old boy who allegedly shot a weapon into the air at Iowa City's pedestrian mall had earlier escaped from a juvenile home.

Iowa City police say the teenager had escaped from the Eldora State Training School for Boys prior to the early Sunday shooting.  Police say he acted alone when he fired several shots, and authorities are no longer looking for a second suspect.

The juvenile faces several charges, including reckless use of a firearm and going armed with intent.

The teen, who was wanted on a nationwide warrant, told authorities he shot his weapon because he felt threatened by another group at the pedestrian mall.  No injuries were reported during the shooting.
