Hogan bond set at $1 million

Bond has been set for a Waterloo man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend.

A judge set the $1 million cash-only bond Friday morning when 36-year-old Shaun Michael Hogan appeared via closed-circuit TV monitor.  Hogan is charged with first-degree murder and remains in the Linn County Correctional Center in Cedar Rapids.

Authorities allege Hogan killed 29-year-old Crystal Marie Gaffney of Waterloo, who is the mother of his 11-month-old daughter.

Linn County authorities are pursuing the criminal charges because they believe Gaffney was killed in Linn County.

Her body was discovered around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday near Walker.  Court records indicated she was killed where she was found in the 4100 block of Linn-Buchanan Road, which is in Linn County a short distance from the Buchanan County line.  Court records state Gaffney was likely killed on Tuesday.

An autopsy determined Gaffney died of head trauma, and her death was ruled to be a homicide.
