Crews searching for teen swept into storm drain

Rescue crews were searching early Tuesday for a Cedar Rapids teen who authorities say fell into a storm drain.

City public safety communications coordinator Greg Buelow says that a 17-year-old was playing Frisbee near an elementary school with two other teens when he was pulled into the drain around 7:20 p.m. Monday.

Buelow says one of the teens tried to rescue the boy but was also swept into the drain.  That teen traveled more than a mile and exited the sewer system in Cedar Lake.  He then walked to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for injuries that were not life threatening.

Crews are searching Cedar Lake and walking possible sewer line paths.  Buelow says conditions are too dangerous to enter the underground sewer system.
