Des Moines seeks ideas for former amusement park

Officials in Des Moines are working with residents to make improvements at a riverfront site that for decades was home to an amusement park.

Officials and residents will discuss plans Monday for the former Riverview Amusement Park site, located near the Des Moines river north of downtown.

The amusement park opened in 1915 and drew thousands of people to its roller coaster, merry-go-round and others rides before closing in 1978.

The site was converted to a city park and nature preserve, but north Des Moines residents want to make more improvements.  Ideas include a music stage, shelters, playground and walking paths.

Jen Fletcher, of the Des Moines Park and Recreation Department, says a timeline and costs for improvement are still to be decided.
