Outagamie Co. considering bond system change

Police officers may play a larger role is setting bond amounts for criminal suspects in the future, in Outagamie County.

Judge John DesJardins says judges use their discretion to set bond at a level that they feel adequately protects the community, but having officers fill out a risk assessment for defendants may be a more accurate evaluation.

He says studies show that setting high bond amounts for low-risk defendants can have damaging consequences, because they spend a significant amount of time with high-risk offenders.

DesJardin says the county's judges are working with local police departments, and the Outagamie County sheriff's department, to see if they'll buy in to the program.
