Bill would ban drunkenness defense

The mother of a murder victim in Door County wants lawmakers to close a loophole that she says is protecting her daughter's killer.

Sherry Anicich says a jury dead-locked on murder charges against Brian Cooper, after he argued he was too drunk at the time to know what he was doing. She's supporting a bill that would ban murder suspects from using that as a defense.

Court records say Cooper confessed in a 911 call that he strangled and raped 21-year-old Alisha Bromfield, at their hotel, after a wedding. She was pregnant.

Cooper is scheduled to be re-tried for murder, in May.
