Officials: Parts of Iowa City under boil advisory

Parts of Iowa City are under a boil advisory as officials determine whether a water main break caused possible water contamination.

The break occurred late Wednesday, and Iowa City Communications Coordinator Shannon McMahon says the main was repaired by Thursday morning.

The precautionary boil advisory will remain in effect until the water is tested and confirmed to meet regulatory standards.  That testing process could take a few days to complete.  McMahon says that officials have not found any bacteria or contamination so far.

The advisory affects residents in west Iowa City and University Heights.  They've been advised to boil their tap water or use bottled water.

The advisory marks the first time Iowa City has issued a boil advisory because of a water main break.
