Officials applaud help during Northwood evacuation

Officials are applauding the work of volunteers helping with the evacuation of a small northern Iowa city following a chemical fire.

Authorities in Northwood used buses Thursday morning to transport residents to a community center in nearby Kensett. Others used their own cars.

Amber Julseth, the city clerk of Northwood, is at the center and says about 250 people showed up.  She says many kept busy by conversing and following the news.  Several emergency response teams were assisting city officials.

Julseth says everyone at the center is doing well.  She called the volunteers "exceptional."

It's unclear when the evacuation will be lifted.  Julseth says evacuees are prepared to stay the night in Kensett if necessary.

The fire began Thursday morning in a building at the local airport.
