Speed limit boost hits snag in Senate

A state lawmaker says Wisconsin should join other states in the Midwest by raising the speed limit on certain highways, to 70 miles an hour.

Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Jerry Petrowski of the Wausau area says the bill that passed the Assembly last year is hung up in the Senate right now. He says he's not sure if it will come up for a vote.

The change would impact Wisconsin's Interstates, and Highway 41.

Supporters argue that most people already drive at least 70 miles an hour on those highways, so it makes sense to raise the limit. Opponents say higher speeds could lead to more serious crashes.
