Sturgeon spearers have big weekend

Sturgeon spearers had much better luck on opening weekend this year.

DNR sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs says the conditions are much better than a year ago. Spearers registered nearly 1,300 over the first two days of the season. That compares to only 270 last year.

Koenigs says they got almost 900 sturgeon on Lake Winnebago, on opening day, and nearly 250 on the upriver lakes. He says it was slower yesterday.

Koenigs says they're very close to one of the harvest caps on the upriver lakes, so the season on those lakes will close at 1 p.m. today. He says on average, people can spear on the upriver lakes for five days.

Koenigs says the season on Lake Winnebago will probably be open until the middle or end of the work week. He says depending on the weather, it's possible, but unlikely, that it would continue into next weekend.
