The UNI Panther women’s basketball team had an unexpected setback in Terre Haute on Friday, falling to the Indiana State Sycamores 65-63.
UNI had defeated Indiana State by 30 last month at the McLeod Center. It was the first Panther loss against the Sycamores since 2014, dropping UNI to 6-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference and 14-9 overall.
The Panthers turned the ball over 21 times, including twice on crucial possessions in the closing minute. Indiana State rallied to the win with a 23-15 fourth quarter. The Sycamores are now 2-10 in the MVC.
Megan Maahs led four Panthers in double figures with 15 points, plus eight rebounds. Karli Rucker (14), Abby Gerrits (13), and Bre Gunnels (10) provided the vast majority of Panther scoring along with Maahs. The UNI bench contributed eight points.
It was also an uncharacteristic free throw shooting night for UNI; the Panthers missed seven of their 19 tries from the foul line.
UNI will try to return from their weekend road trip with a split; they visit Evansville on Wednesday. The Panthers have just one conference road win this winter.
