If you appreciate defense, then the first UNI men’s basketball game of the new season was a good one for you.
It was low scoring all the way, but a spate of successful second half three-point shots helped the Panthers pull away to a 58-53 win against Old Dominion at the McLeod Center.
Spencer Haldiman hit three threes in less than three minutes, helping the Panthers pull ahead by as many as 11 points in the early second half. He and A.J. Green each had a team-high 12 points. Austin Phyfe contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, UNI held the Monarchs to under 36 percent shooting. In less than 12 months, UNI has now edged Old Dominion twice in three tries.
The Panthers’ next game is on the road Saturday against Northern Illinois.
