Waterloo’s Retiring Top-Cop to Run for County Sheriff

A surprise announcement late last(Mon) night from soon-to-be-retired Waterloo Police Chief Dan Trelka – he’s decided to run for Black Hawk County Sheriff.

The election is in November of next year and 3-term incumbent Tony Thompson has not yet announced whether he’ll seek another four years.

Trelka, who is also a Black Hawk County Supervisor, a position he’d have to vacate if elected Sheriff, will leave his police chief’s job at the end of November and will seek the Republican nomination for Sheriff.  Thompson is a Democrat.

If elected Sheriff, Trelka says his priorities will be to improve morale at the Sheriff’s Office, to reduce recidivism, to utilize discretionary Sheriff’s funds to help in the reduction of crime throughout the county, to collaborate with fire services, especially those in rural areas, for the benefit of the entire community, and to work jointly with other area law enforcement agencies to provide fiscally responsible services.
