Trelka Now Wants Sheriff’s Job; Incumbent Says Run, but not While You’re a County Supervisor

The race is on.

Retiring Waterloo Police Chief Dan Trelka announced late last(Mon)night that he’ll seek the Republican nomination for Black Hawk County Sheriff next year.   And early this(Tues) morning, incumbent Sheriff Tony Thompson, a Democrat, responded to Trelka’s announcement by saying that he, too, will seek election to a 4th term.

Thompson says Trelka has every right to run, but not…in his opinion…while he’s serving as an elected county supervisor, with influence over the Sheriff’s Department budget and other matters.   Thompson also told KXEL’s Mark Morris that Trelka’s approach, not telling him of his plans, hurt him personally.

The election is in November of 2020.
