No One Hurt in 15-Car Tama County Train Derailment

No one is certain yet what caused more than a dozen Union Pacific rail cars to run off the tracks early this(Wed) morning about a mile west of Belle Plaine.

Tama County emergency crews were the first to respond to the scene, on the U-P line near X Avenue, south of Highway-E66, around 3:45 am.

Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Chad Hansen counted 15 cars off the tracks, but the engine remained on and no injuries were reported.

Authorities say some of the overturned cars contained soda ash and none of them were handling any hazardous materials.

The Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources was called in to make an evaluation of the scene.
