4G or 5G? Waterloo Council to Discuss Ramifications

The Waterloo City Council will kick off a series of meetings this(Mon) afternoon with a 4:50 work session to discuss design guidelines for some small-cell communications equipment being installed around the country to improve high-speed wireless service.

Waterloo’s proposed guidelines say the city would prefer the equipment be placed in industrial and commercial areas, not residential areas or parks, and that it would be attached to existing utility poles, not on decorative street lights or sign poles.

Unlike the large towers used in the past, small-cell equipment is more compact, but is placed in many more locations.

Tonight’s(Mon) regular meeting begins at 5:30, when the council will take up the matter again and will be asked to adopt the small-cell design guidelines.
